The method of some particular positional examination of the digestive tract the combining examination in the proximal stomach
This paper reports 60 cases of lesions in the proximal stomach and surrounding organs. By the conventional barium meal in radiography of the upper GI, the radiologist is able to detect lesions in the distal stomach, but it is difficult to do the same in the proximal stomach comprising the fundus, cardia, upper body and surrounding organs. Neither palpation nor compression can be applied to the proximal stomach because it is protected or covered by the overlying ribs. When the fundus is not completely distended, a fundal mass can not be recognized and removed. This limits the use of conventional barium meal in radiography. An amendment is to perform a double contrast or selective air-abdomen contrast technique in order to distend the fundus in the proximal stomach and tenhance the mucosal coating produced by high density barium. This will help to detect easily the site, size and outline of a lesion or any other disease in the proximal stomach the wall or the outside of the stomach. The technique thus increases accuracy in radiological diagnosis.
