Abstract
Data on the status of A. obstetricans obstetricans (Laur.) in central Belgium and its ecology and ethology are presented. The similarity between the song of A. o. obstetricans and that of the owl Otus scops L. is noted. The method used for census of the species and its distribution in Europe are discussed. Reproduction of the species, the role of the environment, the effect of soil, preferred ecotypes and water source are considered. Localization of singing specimens, isolation of colonies and their evolution are included.
