The mucous epithelial cell transport of igg and the stimulation of mucous secretion

In a collaborative study of pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in 1972 we recognized a mucous autoantibody in the sera of chronic bronchitis patients. Further investigations found the presence of Fc receptors on the cell membranes of mucous glandular cells as well as the deposition of IgG in the cytoplasms and glandular acini of the respiratory mucous tissue. It indicated the epithelial transport of IgG through Fc receptors. The uptake of IgG by mucous epithelial cells was further proved by organ culture of fresh bronchial tissue resected surgically with enzyme labelled:IgG and/or aggregated IgG. Mice immunized with homologous bronchial tissues and complete Freund's adjuvant could give rise to an autoantibody against mucous epithelial cells and in vivo caused overall deposition of IgG in the cytoplasms of mucous glandular cells as well as in the acini together with the accelerated mucous secretion. It is postulated that this mucous autoantibody while transporting through mucous epithelial cells might serve as IgG directed ligands (or immune complexes) to bring about activation of the cell function, the Fc receptor-secretion coupling, thus resulting in accelerated mucous secretion of the target cells. Clarification of this hypothesis may serve well to aid general theoretical implications as well as the study of pathogenesis and pathology of chronic bronchitis.
