The nutritive value of 9 tropical legume hays and of molasses grass melinis minutiflora

The nutritive value of 9 tropical legumes and 1 grass, perennial soybean, commom, 1RI no. 2, and cooper, siratro, centrosema, Stylosanthes guyanensis, Teramnus uncinatus, Galactia striata, Macrotyloma axillare and molasses grass, were determined by pen feeding trials with sheep. Feed intake and digestibility showed that G. striata and centro have a nutritive value similar to alfalfa. Crude protein values decreased slightly and linearly from 70-200 days of growing. TDN [total digestible nutrients] values were curvilinear, the highest values occurring under 70 and 200 days of growing. In the legumes the apparent digestibility of proteins was 63.8%; in the grass it was 54.5%. In vivo dry matter digestibility was badly estimated by in vitro values. Multiple regression equations were calculated to estimate TDN from components of the proximate analysis. The multiple correlation coefficient was low (0.39) and not significant. Centro was the only crop that gave a significant correlation (P < 0.005) with r = 0.87. Digestible nutrients regressed against crude values, expressed in percentage, showed that protein and other extracts can be considered nutritive entities, but not crude fiber, N-free extract or neutral detergent fiber.
