The ontogeny of the prey catching behavior of the tawny owl strix aluco aluco observations and experiments/

, : The ontogeny of the prey catching behavior of the tawny owl strix aluco aluco observations and experiments/. Behaviour 57(1-2): 1-50

The ontogeny of prey-catching behavior in captive young individuals of the Tawny Owl was studied in the course of 9 breeding periods using a total of 74 young owls. Normal prey-catching and development of prey-catching actions are described. In discussing the conflict between attraction to, and fear of the prey's movements, it is suggested that the inhibition caused by fear has to be overcome by repeated encounters with live prey, i.e., with the stimuli involved. Fear in this special situation might be an adaptation to the possibility of live prey injuring the owl by its reactions of self-defense.
