The pair bond of the common marmoset callithrix jacchus jacchus an experimental investigation

The pair bond of the common marmoset callithrix jacchus jacchus an experimental investigation

Animal Behaviour 31(3): 651-658

The monogamous relationship of the common marmoset C. j. jacchus was studied in 8 breeding pairs. The responses of paired males and females to unfamiliar conspecifics of the opposite sex were 1st recorded in the absence of the mate. Males, but not females, showed sexual soliciting behavior. In the presence of the mate, the paired animals showed strong intra-sexual aggression: males did not solicit unfamiliar females and the previous eagerness of males to mate with and the indifference of females to strangers of the opposite sex were replaced by a tendency to behave aggressively. Contacts between the paired animals also increased and its seems likely that attraction between familiar partners and aggressive behavior directed at strangers are important in maintaining the stability of the pair-bond.
