The part played by micro phyto plankton and nanno phyto plankton in the primary production of a coastal zone in the northwest mediterranean

To determine the relative contribution of each of several phytoplankton sizes to chlorophyll concentration, primary production and dark fixation of 14C, the natural phytoplankton population was divided into several size classes using parallel filtration. The samples were taken in Banyuls-sur-Mer during an annual cycle (1976-1977). Two types of biological response were observed: enhancement of the photosynthesis of large diatoms, and blooms of the nannoplankton cells. The 1st response was related to conditions of fertilization, the 2nd to conditions of dilution caused by the input of fresh water through precipitation and runoff. Most of the biomass, expressed as chlorophyll a, apparently is represented by the nannoplankton fraction. The dark fixation of 14C was related to the largest cells and to large amounts of nutrients. The consequences of prefiltration were also analyzed.
