The pre weaning and post weaning growth of beef calves in relation to the amounts of milk and solid food consumed during the suckling period

Sucking calves from cows with a wide range of milk yields were offered liberal amounts of maize-lucerne pellets (diet A), restricted amounts of lucerne pellets (diet B), or no solid food from birth to weaning at 180 days (diet C). After weaning all calves were offered ad lib a complete diet containing 30% roughage and 14.4% crude protein until they were 330 days old. The amount and kind of solid food offered had no effect on calf body-mass at 91 days of age, while the calves of cows with high milk yields were heavier (P < 0.05) than those of low-yielding dams. At 180 days of age there were differences (P < 0.01) in the mean body-masses of calves offered different diets. At this age the calves of high-yielding cows were still heavier (P < 0.001) than the calves of low-yielding cows, 141.7 and 117.5 kg, respectively. During the period 91-180 days after birth an increase of 1 MJ in milk ME [metabolizable energy] consumption led to a 45% larger (P < 0.05) increase in calf body-mass gain than 1 MJ increase in solid food ME. Differences in body-mass at weaning which were due to the consumption of different amounts of milk persisted for 5 mo. after weaning. Differences at weaning which were caused by the consumption of different quantities of solid food increased slightly for 6 wk after weaning and then declined (P < 0.01).
