The presynaptic effect of histidine in the neuro muscular junction
The influence of L-histidine in different concentrations (0.2-9.0 mM) on synaptic processes in neuromuscular preparations of the frog was studied using intracellular microelectrodes. The histidine caused lowering of the frequency of MEPP [miniature endplate potentials]. In the synapses with initial quantum content of EPP less than 50, the quantum content increased due to increase of the available mediator level. The probability of the transmitter release did not change. Histidine seemed to participate in the positive functional feedback in the neuromuscular synapse; the feedback maybe essential for mobilization of the inactive synapses during intense muscular activity.
