The prevalence and distribution patterns of ecto parasites from wild rodents in southeastern quebec canada

, : The prevalence and distribution patterns of ecto parasites from wild rodents in southeastern quebec canada. Naturaliste Canadien (Quebec) 109(1): 139-146

A survey of the ectoparasites of 7 rodent species (Clethrionomys gapperi, the red-backed vole; Microtus pennsylvanicus, the meadow vole; Napaeozapus insignis, the woodland jumping mouse; Peromyscus maniculatus, the deer mouse; Tamias striatus, the eastern chipmunk; Tamiasciurus hudsonicus, the red squirrel and Zapus hudsonius, the meadow jumping mouse) was undertaken at Johnville Bog in the Eastern Townships region of Quebec. Of 191 rodents, 165 or 86.4% were infested with fleas (17%), lice (11%), mites (81%) or ticks (5%). The prevalence of infestation among all host species was high. Mites were the predominant group on animals carrying single infestations. Multiple infestations were most frequently found on T. hudsonicus. Ectoparasite distribution patterns fit the overdispersed negative binomial distribution. This clumpedness is interpreted on the basis of the biology of host-parasite interrelationship.
