The prevalence of binge drinking and heavy drinking among drunken drivers arrested due to involvement in road traffic accidents

, : The prevalence of binge drinking and heavy drinking among drunken drivers arrested due to involvement in road traffic accidents. Blutalkohol 24(3): 199-203

Blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) and blood gamma glutamyltransferase (GGT) activities of drunken drivers arrested due to involvement in road traffic accidents were studied. Of the drivers above 29 years of age, 81% had BACs > 1.50% and should be considered as binge drinkers. Of the younger ones, 54% had BACs > 1.50%. GGT analyses indicated that 25-30% of those above 29 years of age were heavy drinkers (> 80 g alcohol/day). Binge drinking and heavy drinking seem thus to be important factors in alcohol-related road traffic accidents.
