The prevalence of cysticercosis in zebu in tanzania

, : The prevalence of cysticercosis in zebu in tanzania. Meditsinskaya Parazitologiya i Parazitarnye Bolezni 44(6): 654-658

Zebu carcasses were examined for cysticercosis at a Dar es Salam [Tanzania] meat-packing plant in 1972-1973. Among 163,546 carcasses examined, cysticercoids of beef tapeworm were found in 11,806 (7.2%). The prevalence of infestation in animals from different areas varied from 0-22.3%. The highest infestation rate was found in animals supplied from 5 districts characterized by long rainy periods and abundant vegetation nearly throughout the year. The animal pastures were close to residential areas, the territory of which was fecally contaminated. Examination for the intensity of invasion in 3926 carcasses with additional cutting of cervical muscles and the diaphragm revealed in 367 (9.3%) carcasses 2738 cysticercoids on the entire area of cuts, that is, on the average 7.6 cysticercoids per carcass. From 1-5 cysticercoids were found in 62.9% of the carcasses examined, 6-10 in 13.8%, 11-20 in 6.2%, 21-30 in 6.5%, 31-40 in 3.9% and 50 or more in 4.6% of the carcasses.

Both reactions proceed in 2 steps: a fast reversible 2nd-order reaction followed...
