The prevalence of diabetes in indians and caucasians living in southwestern ontario canada

, : The prevalence of diabetes in indians and caucasians living in southwestern ontario canada. Canadian Journal of Public Health 78(4): 240-243

The prevalence of diabetes was determined for Indians and Caucasians receiving care from a family medical centre in Southwestern Ontario. 80% of the resident of the Caradoc Reserve and Oneida Settlement attend the medical centre; the age-adjusted prevalence of known diabetes was 14.7%. Among Caucasians, the rate was similar to other North American Caucasian populations (2.2%). The average age at diagnosis for Indian females (41 years) was significantly lower compared to Caucasians (56 years) (t=-3.51; p < .001). Indian diabetics were more likely to report a positive parental history of diabetes (54.3%) than were Caucasians (24.4%) (x2 = 9.73; p < .01). Nearly one-half of Caucasian diabetics were asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis. Among Indian diabetics, however, only 25% were asymptomatic. This suggests that the actual prevalence of diabetes in Indians may be much higher. Diabetes is clearly a major health problem for Canadian Indians.
