A blood pressure survey was conducted among more than 3000 individuals in 5 geographic areas where different ethnic groups live. In a house-to-house survey, blood pressure levels were determined on adults present in the study areas. Prevalence rates of blood pressures .gtoreq. 160/95 were as follows: Cebuano-Boholano (Agado, Davao City), 5.4%; Hilonggo-Tiruray (Arakan, Cotabato), 1.6%; Muslim (Sirawan, Davao), 7.9%; Mandaya (New Bataan, Davao Norte), 0.9%; and Indonesian (Sarangani Is.), 11.1%. Prevalence rates of blood pressures .gtoreq. 140/90 were as follows: Cebuano-Boholano, 13.5%; Hilonggo-Tiruray, 12.7%; Muslim, 22.3%; Mandaya, 2.8%; and Indonesian, 21.2%. The various factors that may possibly explain the differences between the ethnic groups are discussed.
