, : The prevention of alloxan induced diabetes in mice by the iron chelator di ethylenetriamine penta acetic acid suggestion of a role for iron in the cyto toxic process. Experientia (Basel) 38(3): 378-379

DETAPAC, an Fe-chelating agent, given to male Swiss-Webster mice prior to alloxan, was able to protect the mice from the diabetogenic actions of alloxan. EDTA, another chelating agent, offered no protection. Possible mechanisms for these effects, including inhibiting of OH radical formation were discussed.
