The properties of a facultative methylotroph identified as protaminobacter ruber

A strain of pink aerobic Gram-negative motile bacteria was isolated. The strain can facultatively assimilate methanol, methylamine and dimethylamine as a source of carbon and energy. It reproduces by division similar to budding. The optimal pH is 6.9-7.2 and the optimal temperature is 28-30.degree. C. The strain does not require additional growth factors. Methanol and methylamine are oxidized by dehydrogenases which are active with phenazine methosulfate. Carbon is assimilated via the serine pathway. The strain has the complete citrate cycle. Carbon dioxide fixation is catalyzed by phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase stimulated with acetyl-CoA. Ammonium is assimilated mainly by reductive amination of pyruvate, glyoxylate and .alpha.-ketoglutarate as well as by glutamine synthetase and glutamate synthease, enzymes of the glutamate cycle. The strain is resistant to streptomycin, lincomycin, novobiocin, oleandomycin, erythromycin, neomycin, ampicillin and nalidixic acid, but is inhibited by kanamycin. The C18:1 acid prevails among other cell fatty acids (> 70%). The GC composition of DNA is 70 .+-. 1 mole%. The strain is identified as Protaminobacter ruber.
