The radioallergosorbent test (RAST) was used for the in vitro diagnosis of asthma. A total of 70 investigations in 40 patients with house dust and mite allergy are reported. In 75% of the patients, RAST was positive, especially in mite allergy. Increased total Ig[immunoglobulin]E levels were correlated with positive case history and skin test results in only about 50% of the cases. After hyposensitization a better correlation was found. RAST is not an alternative, but a useful completion to the traditional methods (skin test, provocation test) used in the diagnosis of allergy, especially in mite allergy and analogous situations where provocation tests are not usually used.
