Investigators of the water in Lake Qarun tended to estimate its salinity by the conventional oceanographic formulae which should be restricted to sea water. The application of these formulae on the lake water would lead to erroneous results in salinity owing to the differences in the ionic composition between lake and sea waters. The bases for accurate estimation of salinity in Lake Qarun by applying the standard oceanographic methods were discussed. Water samples from the lake were examined for chlorinity, conductivity ratio and gravimetric salinity. New empirical relationships between these 3 variables were established. Salinity values estimated from the new equations were very close to those determined gravimetrically. Salinities estimated either from chlorinity using the Knudsen Tables or from the conductivity ratio using the International Oceanographic tables were only 73 and 88% of the gravimetric salinity, respectively.
