The resistance to powdery mildew of some introduced and bulgarian durum wheat cultivars

Resistance to a definite number of races was assessed in a glasshouse. The powdery mildew physiological races 2, 6, 11, 73 and 85 were used for infection under glasshouse conditions at the phase of 2d leaf development. The infection under field conditions at the Experimental field of the Cotton Institute.sbd.Chirpan was caused by the naturally occurring races. Some of the tested cultivars possess race specific resistance to the individual physiological races of powdery mildew, combined with a high resistance on a field infection background. The cultivars Gerardo, Valgerardo, Bacum and the selection number 2833 proved completely resistant to all races applied in the tests. They can be used in breeding programs aiming to develop durum wheat cultivars resistant to powdery mildew. A considerable part of the cultivars studied also had valuable economic characters.
