The thyroid glands of male rats treated with estrogen during various stages of development

Acta Veterinaria 38(2-3): 59-68

ISSN/ISBN: 0567-8315

Thyroid glands of male rats treated with estradiol dipropionate (OeDP) during the neonatal (3rd day), juvenile (16th day) or peripubertal (38th day) period of life, and sacrificed at different time intervals after the treatment were examined, using cytological and stereological methods. The height of follicular epithelium was siginficantly reduced in all animals neonatally treated with estradiol. A significant decrease of follicular cell height was also evident in adult animals treated with estradiol during the juvenile period. In all experimental groups the follicular cell volume density was significantly reduced, while the colloid volume was increased, resulting in a diminution of the activation indices. The appearance of cysternoid GER and far lesser developed Golgi complexes during the neonatal period in comparison with those receiving hormone during the later periods of development, undoubtedly demonstrated decreased sensitivity of these cells to estrogen in growing animals.
