The thyroid hormone secretion rate of muscovy ducks

The thyroid hormone secretion rate of muscovy ducks

Memoirs of the College of Agriculture National Taiwan University 16(1): 114-121

The thyroid hormone secretion rate of Muscovy ducks was estimated using a goiter prevention method. The thyroid hormone secretion rates of males at 187 days of age and females at 190 days of age were 9.27 .mu.g and 10.74 .mu.g L-thyroxine/day per bird., or 0.38 .mu.g and 0.68 .mu.g L-thyroxine/100 g body wt per day, respectively. The secretion rate of females was higher than that of males. The average thyroid weight of normal males was heavier than that of females. The response of the thyroids to the feeding of 0.1% methylthiouracil, which was expressed in terms of the thyroid weight percentage increase in males, was slightly higher in females.
