The utilization of minerals in maize silage through growing bulls

The utilization of minerals in maize silage through growing bulls was examined in a metabolism trial. To the fresh maize was added 0.6% urea, of which 62% was refound in the silage. The animals were fed for 56 days only maize silage with urea and additionally salt lick-stone ad lib. During this time the intake was 5.9 kg dry matter and 3400 starch units and the body weight gain on the average 732 g/day. The daily intake in minerals was 17.5 g Ca, 7.4 g Mg, 12.8 g P, 83 g K and 8.2 g Na. Under these conditions, the daily retention was 9.8 g Ca, 2.0 g Mg, 4.4 g P, 5.0 g K and 2.6 g Na. Utilization was 56% for Ca, 34% for P and 27% for Mg. Absorption was 83% for Ca, 81% for P and 43% for Mg. In spite of a low mineral intake, which met only 35-50% of the recommendations, sufficient retention resulted.
