Regulation and straightening of running waters have recently caused drastic changes of vegetation and landscape. a phytosociological and ecological comparison between natural running waters and regulated, resp. canalized waters shows the changes in different river types, namely highland and lowland rivers. The characteristic aquatic macrophyte communities of the spring region, the water course and the banks including the adjacent riverine meadows are described and correlated to the most important factors of river morphology and ecology. A synecological comparison of the running water communities and their specific ecological requirements shows gradual relations to important hydrochemical parameters (nitrogen, phosphate, chloride content and electric conductivity) responsible for the trophic status of the water. Because of their different ecological amplitude, different runnig water plant communities behave differently in case of regulation and eutrophication. Either dominance of selected species (Zannichellia palustris, Potamogeton pectinatus fo. scoparius) is caused, or the reduction of the characteristic species composition (in case of Callitricho-Myriophylletum and Ranunculetum fluitantis). The regulation of running waters decreases the natural diversity of the habitats and supports the impoverishment of vegetation.
