The vegetation of the calanchi in emilia romagna italy
The plant species found in calanchi in 2 northern Italian clay deposits were enumerated. The 2 areas studied were the Pliocene-Pleistocene clays of Romagna and allochthonous clays in Reggio-Emilia. Twenty-eight species associated with the Spartium bushes at the top were listed, as were 30 ridge-dwelling species (without the turfs of Baiso and Canossa), and 14 spp. of the Tamarix community at the bottom of the calanchi. In Romagna, there was sparse growth among the steep slopes of the ridges (Agropyro-Artemisietum cretaceae). Characteristic for this area were Halo-Agropyretalia halophytes, as well as geophytes, chamaephytes and therophytes. In the flatter turfs, ruderal species predominate, with a weaker representation of halophytes. Hemicryptophytes, geophytes and therophytes are the most strongly represented forms. In the allochthonous clays, on the sparsely populated (Agropyro-Asteretum linosyridis) steep slopes, halophytes recede into the background, while Festuco-Brometea spp. come to the fore. There are very few geophytes. The flat turfs are dominated by Brachypodium pinnatum (reminiscent of the Spartium-outer woods of the Pliocene calanchi) or Festuca rubra.
