The vitamin b 2 status among egyptian school students suffering from various afflictions as evaluated by the erythrocyte glutathione reductase ec 1.6.4.2 assay

, : The vitamin b 2 status among egyptian school students suffering from various afflictions as evaluated by the erythrocyte glutathione reductase ec 1.6.4.2 assay. Nutrition Reports International 29(2): 291-302

Using the erythrocyte glutathione reductase assay, riboflavin nitriture was investigated in Egyptian students 6-12 yr of age from urban and rural communities. Ariboflavinosis was detected in 48 and 23% of those from the villages and city, respectively. All students with clinical symptoms of pellagra and 33% of those infested with parasites had biochemical vitamin B2 deficiency. Oral treatment with nicotinic acid or tryptophan for 4 wk alleviate the pellagra disease and improved the riboflavin status as shown from values of activation coefficient. Protein supplement based on wheat flour + fish protein concentrate (4%) proved to be very effective in improving the riboflavin status as well as the hydroxyproline-creatinine ratio among students with retardation of growth. Dietary riboflavin intakes among students from the villages were below the recommended levels. Marginal intakes were found among city students from low socioeconomic class.
