Four growing sheep, weighing 54.2 .+-. 4.1 kg over the experimental period, were offered pelleted diets, containing 70% wheat straw treated with 0, 2.4, 4.1 or 5.6% NaOH in a 4 .times. 4 Latin square experiment 12 wk duration. Feed and water were offered ad lib. The intakes of digestible organic matter were 779, 1075, 1269 and 1085 g/d [day] for these diets, the corresponding values for Na and water being 11.3, 25.1, 41.8 and 47.7 g and 4.8, 6.5, 8.1 and 8.3 l, respectively. Feed intake appeared limited by the Na load in the case of the 5.6% NaOH-treated straw diet, the sheep tolerating a maximum of 2.2-2.4 g dietary Na/kg0.75 body wt when water was available ad lib.
