Thumb replantations

Thumb replantations

Tidsskrift for den Norske Laegeforening 105(34-36): 2464-7, 2490

The first 14 patients with amputated thumbs referred for replantation to Kronprinsesse Marthas Institutt over a period of one year are reported. One thumb was deep frozen. The remaining 13 thumbs were considered to be feasible replants. One patient refused replantation, so 12 thumbs were replanted-six total and six subtotal amputations. Six (50%) thumbs survived. The survival rate was equal for totally and subtotally amputated thumbs. No thumbs amputated by crush or avulsion injuries survived. The amputation level did not affect the survival rate. One thumb with absent venous drainage survived after construction of an AV-anastomosis. The functional result 6 months after the replantation is encouraging. The function of the CMC joint is normal in all six successfully replanted thumbs. Five patients have normal function of the MCP joint, one MCP joint was fused. Three patients have active flexion/extension of the distal thumb phalanx. All six patients have good protective sensory function.
