Tobacco budworm control and susceptibility to acephate and methomyl on flue cured tobacco in florida usa

The possible failure of acephate and methomyl sprays in control of the tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (F.), on flue-cured tobacco, Nicotiana tabacum L., in Florida was evaluated in the field in 1985 and 1986. Acephate at 1. 13 to 1.22 kg Al ha was significantly more effective for budworm control than methomyl at 0.70 to 0.71 kg Al/ha. The efficacy of both compounds against the budworm was enhanced with increased dosage. Laboratory bioassays comparing the Florida budworm larval population with an established susceptible larval population in Louisiana indicated no resistance in the Florida population to acephate, but a 6.8-fold resistance to methomyl.
