The moisture content of current and 2nd yr needles sampled from healthy and diseased trees, bare and bagged shoots and tips and bases of shoots was determined. Tip needles of the current and 2nd yr retained a significantly lower water content (expressed as percent of needle dry weight) than base needles, as did needles from bare shoots compared with bagged ones during the period Jan.-May. The lethal threshold for current year needles was 90-95% but was lower for 2nd yr needles. A decrease in the moisture content of the trees would probably bring about a decline of the moisture content of the needles. Tip needles of the current year would attain the lethal value faster than base needles as a consequence of their significantly lower moisture content. More severe needle browning occurred on needles of bare shoots because their moisture content was significantly lower than the bagged ones.
