Transfer of spermatozoa into the spermatheca of the honey bee queen

The active migration and passive transport of the spermatozoa into the spermatheca of the queen bee were studied. Warm Ringer solution poured on the spermathecal duct in the dissected abdomen triggered muscle contractions. Polyethylene spheres, 7 .mu.m in diameter injected as suspension into the queens oviducts were transported into the spermatheca, although in a small proportion only (3.10-2 compared to spermatozoa of the same volume injected). Migration speed of spermatozoa was highest in ducts < 35 .mu.m diameter. For active migration into the spermatheca the spermatozoa needed activation by liquid within the duct. Spermatozoa also migrated into the peripheral ducts of the spermathecal gland. The complex interaction of the factors involved in the process of filling the spermatheca was schematically presented.
