Transmission of tumor character through tissue culture of nicotiana tabacum crown gall tumor

Transmission of tumor character through tissue culture of nicotiana tabacum crown gall tumor

Korean Journal of Genetics 8(3): 125-132

Expression and transmission of tumor character in tissue culture of crown gall tumor, induced by Agrobacterium tumefaciens B6, in Nicotiana tabacum var. Wisconsin #38 were investigated. Unorganized tumors were induced by the infection of A. tumefaciens B6 and tumor-derived calluses showed transformed characters, such as hormone-autonomous growth and octopine biosynthesis in tissue culture system. On the hormone-free medium, normal and bizzare type shoots were developed from tumor calluses. Specifically, new tumors developed on the stem and root of callus-derived regenerants. From these tumor explants, shoots were directly regenerated without callus formation on hormone-free medium. Namely, character of crown gall tumor was transmitted to next generation through somatic cell culture system and transmission of tumor formation diminished through further generation.
