Trends and some characteristics of hospital infections in the hospital de pediatria del centro medico nacional mexico 1977 1980
Trends and characteristics of nosocomial infections from 1977-1980 in the Hospital de Pediatria del Centro Medico Nacional are presented, according to the data obtained from a continous and permanent surveillance system. The nosocomial infection rate increased from 1.9/100 discharges in 1977 to 3.4/100 in 1980 (mean, 2.5%). The most frequent types of infection were gastroenteritis (29.4%), those secondary to venopuncture (24.5%), surgical wounds (17.3%), respiratory tract (16.6%) and bacteremias (10.6%). Except for surgical wound infections, all had the same ascending trend. Of the bacteria associated with these infections, 3 of every 4 isolations were gram-negative. Despite this trend, gram-positive bacteria, principally epidermidis, increased and gram-negative bacteria diminished. Some interesting features about nosocomial measles and varicella are also discussed.
