Trends in loose smut ustilago nuda infections in certified seed of barley in england and wales uk 1976 to 1983

Trends in loose smut ustilago nuda infections in certified seed of barley in england and wales uk 1976 to 1983
The incidence of loose smut (Ustilago nuda (Jens.) Rostr.) in certification samples of winter and spring barley between 1976 and 1983 is reported and discussed. The extent and severity of infection has been greater in winter than in spring barley. Over the period under review the proportion of winter barley seed lots with any infection and with infection in excess of 0.5% has increased, whereas the opposite trend was evident for spring barley. Factors influencing loose smut infection - climatic conditions, areas of crops, chemical seed treatments and varietal resistance - are examined in an attempt to account for the observed trends. Weather conditions more favorable for infection at anthesis in winter barley than in spring barley were thought to be a major factor and varietal resistance a contributory factor in accounting for the difference between the crops. The increase in area of winter barley and decrease in spring barley area was thought to be responsible for the worsening picture in winter barley and improvement in spring barley.
