, : Trends in the yields of major exploited fisheries of the east coast of india. Indian Journal of Fisheries 22(1-2): 187-197

On the east coast of India, the elasmobranches, catfishes, other sardines, anchovies and whitebaits, other clupeids, sciaenids, ribbonfish, silverbellies and penaeid prawns form the major fisheries and contribute 63% of the total marine fish catch of the coast. The trends in the yields of these fisheries during a 21 yr period (1952-1972) were analyzed. In West Bengal and Orissa, elasmobranchs, catfishes, anchovies and whitebaits, other clupeids, sciaenids, ribbonfish and silverbellies form a good fishery. It is predicted that these fisheries will continue to yield good catches. In Andhra the fisheries of other sardines, other clupeids, sciaenids, ribbon fish and penaeid prawns are successful and they will maintain the present increasing trend in their landings in the coming years. In Tamil Nadu, only catfishes, other sardines, anchovies, whitebaits and sciaenids form a very good fishery and they also will yield higher catches in the future.
