Twinning rate in the catte population and importance of breeding value and mating value for twinning in ai bulls

Twinning rate in the catte population and importance of breeding value and mating value for twinning in ai bulls

Archiv fuer Tierzucht 31(3): 231-240

A total of 8,700,777 clavings were recorded 1970 and 1986 and the twinning rate was found to average 1.06% (computerized recordings). As a result of up-grading Black-Pied dairy cattle with Holstein Friesian, twinning rate increased in the genotypes carrying 50% Friesian blood. Differences were found between the AI bulls of the genotypes under study in their adjusted breeding and mating values for twinning, variation coefficients ranging from 37.0 to 59.5% and 16.2% to 37.9%, respectively. Chances are discussed of improving, by way of breeding, the twinning rate both in the dairy herds and in specific fattening herds.
