Ultrastructural changes in the dorsal funiculi of the spinal cord during ischemia

Effect of partial ischemia on the dorsal cord funiculi was studied in 14 dogs. Gradation of the changes in correlation to the duration of ischemia and to the time for which the experimental animals survived was observed. After ligation below the origin of the renal arteries, relatively small segregation of the layers of the myelin sheath and vacuolation of the cytoplasm were found. As the duration of ischemia lengthened, changes in the myelin sheaths and axoplasm became more pronounced. With a high ligature, changes in the myelin sheath and axoplasm were more advanced, due to an abrupt and marked change in the blood supply, which was manifested in destruction of the myelin sheath after only 80 min ischemia and in changes in the axoplasm, in which the number of neurofilaments increased, which contained altered mitochondria and lysosomes and which sometimes disappeared altogether.
