Ultrastructural correlates of luminescence in porichthys notatus photophores 1. effects of spinal cord stimulation and exogenous noradrenaline

Light emission induced by electrical stimulation of the spinal cord is associated with ultrastructural alterations of varicose nerve endings, photocyte organelles and membranes in Porichthys photophores. Nerve profile changes appear first and include alterations of shape, number and distribution of synaptic vesicles, and invaginations of axolemma and mitochondrial swellings. Protocyte vesicles markedly coalesce and their membranes are incorporated inside vesicular pools, whereas photocyte microvilli sharply reduce at the cell periphery. Luminescence obtained by noradrenaline [norepinephrine] administration is accompanied by similar, but more acute ultrastructure changes of photocytes, whereas no marked ner profile alteration is noted after this treatment. These and other observations, such as specialized synaptic contact presence are discussed in terms of neural activity and processes within photocytes which may lead to light production.
