Ultrastructural features of the transformation of the pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelium to the stratified squamous epithelium in the human respiratory passages

Ultrastructural features of the transformation of the pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelium to the stratified squamous epithelium in the human respiratory passages

Folia Morphologica 24(3): 296-304

Steps leading to the transformation of the pseudostratified columnar epithelium to 2 stratified squamous were studied in bronchial epithelium obtained from a group of 18 children and adults. The 1st signs observed in the altered pseudostratified epithelium are a higher content of fine cytoplasmic filaments in the cytoplasm of some epithelial cells, a more complicated structure of the lateral cell membrane and an increase in the number of desmosomes. In this phase, marked degeneration of the goblet cells occurs. In the course of further development of the stratified squamous epithelium, the polarity of the epithelial cells changes, the contours of some cells become more irregular, complex interdigitations appear between the neighboring cells and there is an increase in the number of desmosomes. The most conspicuous feature of cells of the stratified epithelium is the occurrence of the large number of fine cytoplasmic filaments. In some cells also dense, unbounded keratohyaline granules appear. In the human bronchial epithelium, only isolated cornified cells are found. In young subjects, the 1st phase of transformation of the epithelium was occasionally detected but fully developed stratified squamous epithelium was found only in older adults with a long history of repeated or chronic respiratory diseases.
