Uptake of serotonin by human platelets and its relevance to central nervous system involvement in hypertension

The central serotonergic neurons have an important regulatory function on the cardiovascular system. Human blood platelets and serotonin (5-HT) containing neurons in the CNS have numerous similarities. The uptake of serotonin by human platelets was studied in normal subjects and in essential hypertensive patients. The 5-HT content of platelets and 5-HT uptake by the platelets were significantly reduced in hypertensive subjects as compared to control. A deficiency of serotonin centrally may lead to disinhibition of the serotonergic mechanisms leading to hypertension. A decreased serotonergic neuron activity may co-exist with a catecholaminergic neuron over-activity in essential hypertension. This is the 1st report of altered serotonin mechanism in clinical hypertension.
