The influences of ration composition (protein/energy ratio and crude protein as a percentage of dry matter), milk yield, live weight and parity on milk urea concentrations were studied in 13 first-calvers and 36 multiparous cows of the Swedish Red and White breed. Daily milk yields were 4-28 kg and the live weights varied 447-700 kg. When the cows were fed in accordance with the Swedish standard recommendations, milk urea concentrations were affected by all factors studied (P < 0.05). Milk urea showed a positive correlation to the measures of ration composition and also to milk yield; increasing weight was followed by decreasing urea values (-0.6 mmol/l per 100 kg). First-calves had milk urea concentration 0.76 mmol/l lower than the multiparous cows. After addition of .apprx. 300 g of digestible crude protein to the standard ration, the protein/energy ratio and also the protein content of the diet was almost the same for all cows. Following this protein supplementation, milk urea concentrations increased by 1.6 mmol/l on average to a mean level of 7.1 mmol/l. The estimated effect of parity was the same as before supplementation, whereas the negative effect of weight became more pronounced (-0.9 mmol/l per 100 kg) and milk yield and ration composition had no detectable influence (P < 0.05). The effect of milk yield seen when feed was given in accordance with the standard recommendations was not due to yield as such or to the absolute amounts of feed ingested, but to the correlation between yield and protein/energy ratio in the diet under controlled feeding conditions.
