Variability and correlation coefficients for grain protein and other economic traits in durum wheat triticum durum

Twenty-three strains of T. durum from Italy, Tunisia, United Arab Republic and Ethiopia were studied for grain protein, sedimentation value, Ca content of grain, grain yield per plant, grain ash content, 100 grain wt, grains per spike, spikes per plant, days to earing, plant height, spike length and spikelets per spike. The heritability estimates for grain protein, sedimentation value, ash content, Ca content and grain yield were 56, 77, 61, 34 and 41%, respectively. The estimates of heritability were high for plant height, the days to flowering and the 100 grain wt and very low for spikes per plant and grains per spike. The genotypic coefficient of variability and the expected genetic advance were relatively high for plant height, sedimentation value, ash content, the grain yield per plant and the 100 grain wt, but low for the grain protein. The grain protein had a significant positive phenotypic correlation with the sedimentation value and a negative association with the days to flowering and spikes per plant.
