Variability heritability and genetic advance in bunch and spreading types of groundnut arachis hypogaea

In 20 strains each of bunch and spreading types of groundnut (A. hypogaea Linn.) grown on rainfed lands, genotypic variance was higher than the environmental variance for all the characters, except length of internode in the spreading group. Genotypic coefficient of variation was higher for number of secondary branches, node number of last effective peg and pod yielded plant in both the groups. Broad-sense heritability was high for all the characters in both groups, except shelling percentage and harvest index in the bunch group, and length of internodes and number of primary branches in the spreading group. Genetic advance was high for pod yield per plant, number of secondary branches and node number of the last effective peg in both the groups.
