Variability of seed and plant characteristics in vicia faba

Populations (14) of broad bean (V. faba L.) collected in several areas of Southern Italy and 26 lines and 9 varieties were studied at Valenzano (Bari) during 1975-76 season to ascertain the existing variability in the material and the influence of planting date and method of isolation (presence or absence of pollinators) on the expression of the variability. Twelve morphobiological characteristics regarding stem, leaves, inflorescences, pods and seeds were observed. Results showed a range of variability for the characteristics which may be considered yield components like: number of pods and number of seeds/pod. When the plants were isolated from insects, the pod and seed setting was reduced. Compared to unisolated material (= 100) the number of pods per plant and the yield per plant were 21.9% and 21.0% in the varieties, 26.7% and 23.2% in the populations and 32.3% and 28.9% in the lines, respectively. For the varieties the isolation treatment seems only to affect pod and seed setting related characteristics for which differences exist among varieties in normal culture disappears under isolated conditions. Differences among populations for the examined chararacteristics are still present when the plants are isolated. The characteristics were less variable in local populations than in varieties, while for the lines all the characteristics were strongly affected by isolation condition. The degree of selffertility (expressed as ratio between number of seeds in isolation and the number of seeds in open pollination) is higher in local populations than in varieties. Correlations among characteristics are higher in the unisolated materials.
