Variability of the brown garden snail helix aspersa

Variability of the brown garden snail helix aspersa

Bulletin du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle Zoologie 311: 425-442

H. aspersa is an Atlanto-Mediterranean species rather ubiquirous, and in which polymorphism is expressed by variations in size, color and banding, shape, thickness and sculpture of the shell. These different morphs are listed. The color banding pattern of the shell have a genetic origin but the environment may add a secondary effect to this variability. Several varieties seem to be adaptive. Some morphs may be subspecies. Origin of the giant and dwarf forms is discussed. Polymorphism probably has played a large part in the species potentiality of adaptation and successful introduction.
