Abstract
The regularity features of general variability and variability with regard to modification and genotype were studied in 24 cultivar specimens of different origins (USSR, Mexico, Canada, USA). The heritability of 22 commercially important characters was also considered. The variability in modification significantly exceeded genotypic differences of most quantitative characters. Genotypic variability exceeded differences in modification with respect to the number of developed spikelets in an ear and height of plants. This fact ensures higher effectiveness of the selection for these characters.
