Air pollution can change soil conditions and cause selection in forest tree populations. To stimulate the effects of toxic soil conditions a hydroponic system was developed and applied, by which a quantification of selection effects was possible in Norway spruce (Picea abies). Eighty open-pollinated progenies were tested in Al-sensitivity in hydroponics with a molaric Ca/Al-ratio of 0.02. Individual variation in Al-sensitivity was high. Selection was traceable by the use of related plant material. Strong associations between isozyme gene loci and Al-sensitivity were not always found. However, comparisons between genetic structures of seed parents with sensitive and tolerant progenies, respectively showed significant differences at one of the gene loci of the glutamate oxalacetate transaminase (GOT-B). This result suggests Al-induced differentiations on the allelic level.
