Variation in pathogenicity of xanthomonas oryzae and resistance of rice varieties to the pathogen

Rice varieties and isolates of X. oryzae distributed in Indonesia were classified on the basis of their differential interaction. The isolates were divided into 3 groups, one of which is the same as group III of the Kozaka's classification system, virulent to the Kinmaze, Kogyoku and Rantai Emas groups, but avirulent to the Wase Aikoku group, and distributed most widely in Indonesia. One of the other 2 groups is virulent to all the 4 rice varietal groups, and named group IV. The last group, found only in Bali, is quite different in pathogenicity from the other bacterial groups, virulent to the Kinmaze group and the Wase Aikoku group but avirulent to Kogyoku group and Rantai Emas group, and is named group V. Bacterial group I and II were not found in Indonesia. Rice varieties were classified into 5 groups based on the reactions to those bacterial groups. A new varietal group, which was named Jawa group, was subdivided from the Wase Aikoku group. High correlations were obtained among different bacterial groups in the quantitative resistance of rice varieties, indicating that the quantitative resistance is non-specific to the bacterialgroups, i.e., horizontal.
