Red cells in urine of long-distance runners varied from a minimum of 0-2 to a maximum of 11-20/field. The fewest red cells appeared in the urine of sprinters. Cylinders for sprinters are similar for those in hematuria. There were few erythrocytes in middle-distance runners' urine. Findings tend to become more abnormal as one proceeds from light sports (sprinting) to the more gruelling types (long-distance runners). Though running is not considered very traumatic (such as football and boxing), still it subjects the kidneys to small and repeated traumatisms.
