.delta.13C determinations on cellulose prepared from a specimen of A. australis (kauri) which grew in New Zealand during the last 1000 yr are presented. The observed .delta.13C variations are dominated by an age effect causing a relatively large depletion in 13C towards the center of the tree studied. The short-term fluctuations in the cellulose .delta.13C curve appear to be temperature related and may represent a record of warm and cold periods in New Zealand's climate. This record is discussed together with information available from other sources. The fluctuations in New Zealand's climate during the last millennium were basically similar to those in the climate of northwestern Europe.
