Brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens S., and whitebacked planthopper (BPH), Sogatella furcifera H., have been most important rice crop pests in Korea since the early 1970s. Changing intensive cultural practices in rice following the introduction of high-yielding varieties have resulted in their extensive outbreaks, mainly in southern Korea. Although timely application of insecticides provides effective control, large scale chemical control is difficult and expensive. Repeated sprayings upset the natural balance between the insect and its natural enemies. The logical approach to BPH control would be to use host plant resistance as part of an integrated pest management program. Factors that govern the susceptibility or resistance of rice cultivars to brown planthopper and white-backed planthopper were determined, and the possible cause or causes of the breakdown of resistance in certain cultivars, and yield losses on the different rice cultivars in Korea were investigated.
